Vinyl Wood Flooring — A Great Replacement For Hardwood

by Nancy

It is without a doubt that hardwood flooring is a beautiful floor type that enhances greatly any home. However it is also true that it’s one of the most expensive types.

Particularly in these bad economic times, getting a cheaper alternative which still looks beautiful at home is many times the sensible thing to do. This is where vinyl wood flooring comes into place.

Vinyl wood flooring, or simply just vinyl flooring is either a sheet vinyl or tile vinyl. Over the years this has been developed and enhanced to a point there one can simply not discern any differences from real wood flooring when laid down. It easily mimics all sorts of materials, including hardwood, stone, metal and various synthetic types. Not only that but it does it at a fraction of the cost of the real thing.

You can find it in many different finishes, be it light or dark, and with many wood effects, whereby in fact you think you have in front of you either cherry, or oak or maple or any other wood type flooring. Tile flooring is very popular however when you buy your set, make sure that the tile pieces match. Sometimes tiles coming from different manufacturers might have some differences to what you already have, or even between each other. It only takes a ligher or darker shade between the tiles for them to no longer be matching.

Of course upon closer inspection, there is a difference between vinyl and solid wood which vinyl simply cannot overcome. While the look is pretty much the same, the feel is not exactly. When you touch the vinyl plank flooring it doesn’t feel just like the hardwood flooring. However this disadvantage, believe it or not, has additional advantages that hardwood flooring might no have.

Vinyl flooring is waterproof. We know that hardwood flooring is sensitive to puddles of water on its surface which need to be immediately dried up with a towel or something else. Moisture makes wood expand or contract, which creates many problems to the flooring. Vinyl is safe from this. It won’t soak up the spilled water as you can clean and dry them up any time without adverse reaction of water staying too long on the material. Stain resistance is something else that vinyl flooring is good at — something that is very advisable to avoid with wood floors. As an added benefit, the vinyl material lasts for a long time in a home that has this flooring installed and if you have pets at home that might scratch your floors with their paws, you don’t have to worry about this with the vinyl wood flooring. This is scratch resistance, much more so than hardwood.

As I mentioned above, they are a great alternative to real wood flooring, giving your room a great solid wood look and giving you a real cheaper alternative when it compares to solid wood flooring. Installing vinyl wood plank floors is not difficult at all to do at home. To install them all you need is having a utility knife with a sharp place and a tape measure to get the measurements right before laying down your flooring. You can either install them over a sub-flooring or over concrete directly. It is only important for the foundation to be smooth, without any bumpy surfaces.

With the many colors available, vinyl wood flooring is a real alternative to the original and expensive solid wood flooring nowadays, which will last for a long time and make your living room, or any other room you install it in, elegant and modern looking. Also don’t forget about prices. If you check out pricing information, you will see that vinyl is much cheaper than hardwood. So while you are getting a good quality material for your flooring, you will get it cheaper. If this isn’t a good motivator to buy vinyl flooring, I don’t know what it is.
