Vinyl Installation

Sheet Vinyl (Also known as “Resilient” flooring)

Storage of  new sheet vinyl is as important to a successful installation as the technique used to install it.  Improper storage can affect the outcome of the installation.  Climate control of temperature and humidity are essential.  All sheet goods should be tightly rolled face (decorative side) out and not unrolled until just prior to installation to avoid distortion of the size and pattern.

Subfloor preparation is also critical to the success of resilient floor. Make sure it is structurally sound, flat, rigid, free of any debris and oily or waxy substances.  The absence of moisture and mold or mildew is also a requirement.  Special care must be taken when installing over an existing floor covering surface.  Consult your sales associate or manufacturer specifications for additional information.

Periodically, you may discover concealed damaged once your old floor covering has been removed.  It is at this time that a qualified installer will be able to determine any repairs necessary to bring the floor into compliance with manufacturer specifications and allow it to properly accept the new flooring.

It is important to determine what furniture and/or appliances can and will be moved by the installer.  Typically, there are select items, such as antiques, pianos and aquariums, for which moving services may not be available.   Most flooring installers are not licensed to disconnect or reconnect water or gas.  It is recommended that a licensed professional be retained to take care of plumbing, electrical and electronic needs.  If you are doing the furniture and appliance removal yourself, be sure to have the work areas cleared before the installer arrives.  Please consult your sales associate for more specific information.

If seams are required, it is important to have them properly placed and sealed to maximize performance.  Note that many decorative vinyls have pattern matches that must be observed when completing the installation.  The measurer will have included enough material to accommodate the specified pattern match if seams are required.

Proper use and application of the selected adhesive is vital to the life of the newvinyl floor .  The adhesive ensures the vinyl will stay in place.  Using an adhesive that is not compatible with the specific flooring may cause discoloration or compromise the performance of the floor. In many cases this will also void the warranty of the product so be sure to consult the manufacturer specifications for more details.

Often, a rubber or vinyl base is installed around the perimeter of the floor to protect the edges.  Sheet vinyl may also be self-coved, or curved up onto the wall, in place of a separate base.  Your sales associate can discuss the options available to you.

Typically, sealing of the floor, other than seams, is not necessary.  Depending on the finish of the product you’ve selected, maintenance for vinyl flooring is usually minimal.  Often, there are manufacturer restrictions on the amount of time required after installation before walking on or replacing furniture and appliances onto the new flooring.  Be sure to observe the appropriate waiting period to allow the new floor to set properly.  Always use appropriate protectors under furniture to minimize the risk for damage.  See your manufacturer specifications for additional information.  With the proper installation and maintenance, your new Vinyl Flooring will last for years to come.
