A beautiful, sustainable and stylish choice for any home.

Choosing your Timber

There is a large selection of Australian Timbers including Tasmanian Oak/Victorian Ash, Spotted Gum, Jarrah, Sydney Blue gum, Brushbox. Ironbark (red and grey), Blackbutt And many more. Generally Tasmanian oak is the most common flooring in Australia, it is made up of a few different species found in Tasmania and Victoria (including Vic ash) it is the most cost effective, and less problematic than some of the other species, if your after one of the more colourful harder species extra efforts should be taken when acclimatising and appropriate sealers must be used on the oily varieties.

Timber being a natural material, expands and contracts depending on the climate, Timber flooring is kiln dried to usually 10-12% moisture content in Victoria, it is important that the flooring is acclimatized before installation, otherwise if the timber is to wet it will shrink causing a lot of gapping, if to dry the timber will expand causing either cupping (ridges between the boards) or can even find a week spot that will buckle out.   It is also important to check the moisture content of the particleboard, which needs to be within 2% moisture content of the flooring. Air conditioning and heating can also affect the moisture content of your floor.

Edge bonding is a problem caused from a floor being laid where moisture is an issue, either from a subfloor being too wet, not acclimatizing the flooring properly, or even moisture getting onto the floor after it has already been laid, if the floor is still wet while being sanded and polished each board will shrink over the following months as they dry out to match the climate and if coated with solvent based polyurethane they will either clump together causing a large gap every few boards or sometimes even find a weak spot in the timber and split the side of the board, water based finishes are a safer option for some new floors, but are still not guaranteed to prevent edge bonding, suppliers instructions recommend using penetrating oils to cover themselves against any legalities. If a freshly laid floor has cupped prior to sanding it’s a good idea to check the timbers moisture content before choosing your floor finish to avoid any problems.

Feature Floors

Feature floors are gaining popularity in recent years, appearing in gallery’s, cafes and shopfronts and are as equally impressive in your own home, feature flooring is full of natural characteristics of timber including gum veins, gum pockets, fiddle back grain, natural insect holes and a large variation in colours, or can be re-milled out of recycled timbers such as Warf timbers and old building structures.

Floating Floors

Floating floors can be a great alternative to solid timber depending on your personal preference, budget and time deadlines, Floating floors are not fixed down to the subfloor like solid timber, instead they “float” over a foam underlay, usually with good acoustic properties great for apartment complexes or multiple storey dwellings were sound is an issue. The extremely fast installation makes them a great candidate for shop fronts where time is a factor.

Bamboo Flooring – Strand woven Bamboo flooring is made from the bamboo strands glued together forming an extremely dense hardwearing material an excellent and more natural looking timber alternative, Strand woven bamboo is the superior choice of bamboo flooring the other variants are usually bamboo veneer covering softwood and is much less durable. The quality strand woven bamboo is around the $50 per square meter mark and is factory pre finished with 6 coats of hard wearing UV cured acrylic coating.

Laminate Flooring – is generally a lot cheaper, made either from a thin timber veneer or vinyl, once worn it will need to be replaced. The vinyl version can be reasonably hard wearing but in some situations I have seen the fake timber grain worn right off.   Be very weary of the thin timber veneers as one scratch can reveal the white layer beneath. If you have a tight budget (have seen as low as $14 a square meter) and looking to neaten up an old holiday house or something similar laminate flooring may be a great option for you.

Engineered Hardwood – is the Rolls Royce of floating floors, with a 5-6mm thick solid timber layer on top, most quality timber species available and can be re sanded and finished just like solid timber but with the benefits of a super-fast installation, Engineered floors aren’t cheap costing around the $100+ a square meter mark.
