Rubber floor mats are rugged. Some are interlocking for commercial application and other’s are covered with carpet or in roll form.

If you own a hair dressing salon, workout gym or any other small business that gets a lot of foot traffic, you may consider investing in rolled rubber flooring rolls. Its a semi-permanent type of flooring, that you can lay yourself.

You can use these D.I.Y. steps to lay the rubber flooring in one day or two depending on the size of the area.

Step 1 — Unroll the Rubber flooring roll

The rubber flooring comes in rolls. Set the roll in the middle of where you plan to put it and unroll it. Lay it flat and let it relax and lay itself out smooth.

Leave it like that for at least 24 hours so that the wrinkles it might have gotten while rolled up can come out.

Step 2 — Fit the Strips

Once the rubber flooring rolls have relaxed cut them into strips, whether diagonal, short or long, depending on what your final patterned flooring design is going to look like. Do not cut them exact at this point however.

Cut them with at least a foot longer on each border, so you can correct any measurement mistakes you might have made, when youre doing the final cutting and fitting.

Step 3 — Trim the Rubber

Place the strips in the pattern that you want them. Once they are in position, begin to trim the edges so that they line up properly. Make sure you have a sharp knife and a straight edge, for example a yard-ruler.

Step 4 — Apply the Adhesive

This process is probably the most time-consuming as you have to allow for time for the adhesive to set. You can remove the strips one by one or you can remove up to about five tiles depending on their sizes.

After youve removed the strip(s), apply at least 1/16 inch adhesive to the floor.

The adhesive should be evenly spread over the entire area. Wait about 15 to 20 minutes for the adhesive to set. Then you can start attaching the rubber to the floor.

Step 5 — Roll the Floor

After youve set the rubber flooring rolls in place on the adhesive, use a rolling pin or a length of large thickness round dowel rod to roll out any bulges or remaining wrinkles.

This process also makes sure that the rubber is placed firmly in the adhesive and that all of the rubber is touching the adhesive.

Step 6 — Remove Adhesive Spills

There may be some adhesive that seeps through the small spacing left between the rubber flooring pieces. You need to have a damp (not too wet) cloth on hand to remove the adhesive.

This is an important step as the adhesive may come on top of the flooring and will be harder to remove when it is dried, leaving a mark on the flooring.

If you have been thinking about getting a home gym or designing a playroom for your little ones, the ideal floor for these rooms are rubber flooring rolls because they provide cushioning and they are durable and will withstand high traffic.

Although this is the ideal flooring for some rooms, it can be a little hard to install and while some people may believe that it can only be done by a professional, you can do it yourself.

It takes time and patience but by following the simple D.I.Y. steps above, you will learn how to lay rubber flooring in patterns to fit into whatever space that you may have on hand.
