Introduction to ThermoFloor®

ThermoFloor is a 4-in-1 (heating, insulating, noise reducing, moisture abating) radiant floor heating pad specifically designed for laminate, glue-down and floating hardwood and engineered wood floors. Unlike most other systems, thislaminate radiant floor heating system installs without having to be imbedded in cement! It operates on standard household voltage and produces energy-efficient heat at a maximum 10 Watts per sq. ft. ThermoFloor incorporates ThermoSoft’s patented FiberThermics® heating elements instead of conventional metal wires. FiberThermics® technology embodies exclusive safety and durability properties that uniquely qualify ThermoFloor for direct contact with combustible flooring materials like laminate and wood. ThermoFloor also incorporates a patented, upgraded underlayment pad that provides subfloor insulation, moisture abatement and noise reduction.

  1. Determine Heated Floor Area Dimensions

To determine the heated floor areas dimensions, measure the floor areas to be heated. If the room is rectangular room, measure the length and width of the heated area. If it is L-shape, measure the area of the two rectangles. If it is a more complicated shape, then draw a floor plan and measure all dimensions of the heated floor area.

  • Determining the Floor Heating Pads Needed
    • ThermoFloor comprises rectangular shaped heated floor pads that must be selected to fit inside of your floor space without being cut. Please visit the ThermoFloor Shop Online page to see the available pad sizes.
    • Multiple heating pads can be connected to one thermostat as long as the total Amp load of all the heating pads does not exceed the 15 Amp limit of the floor heating thermostat and the circuit size. Generally, 200 sq. ft. of of 120V heating pads can be connected to one thermostat per 120V, 15 Amp circuit and 400 sq.ft. of 240V heating pads can be connected to one thermostat per 240V, 15 Amp circuit. Connect the pre-attached lead wires in parallel electrical connections to the thermostat. If the heated area is larger than 400 sq. ft. then a larger circuit and an additional thermostat or contactor/relay is required.
    • Pads should not overlap each other and should not be cut. All pads should be placed next to each other with the edges seamed with duct tape. Lead wires are routed around the perimeter or between the seams of the pads but not under the pads. Please visit our Installation Page for more information.
    • Since the heat does not spread beyond the boundary of the radiant floor heating pad, avoid cold spots in the floor by butting pads together and covering as much of the central area of the room or traffic pattern as possible.
    • To prevent overheating and possible damage to your heated floor, avoid placing overly thick area rugs and furniture with solid bottoms over the heated floor. Furniture with legs to provide air circulation above the warm floor is acceptable.
    • When not covering the entire floor, fill-in unheated areas with our matching non-heating underlayment padding to maintain consistent floor height.

  • Thermostats
    • Choose between our manual and programmable thermostats.
      • Our manual thermostat has a mechanical on/off switch and temperature dial. No timer. No built-in GFCI.
      • Our programmable thermostat provides for automatic programming of 4-events per day (excluding weekends), seven days per week and a built-in GFCI ( ground fault circuit interrupter).
    • Each thermostat accepts a 15 Amp load or up to 200 sq. ft. of electric floor heating pads on a 15 Amp circuit.
    • Each thermostat includes an external 10 ft. floor sensor wire, the tip of which is placed on top of the floor heating pad between the heating wires and under the final floor covering; the other end is connected to the thermostat.
    • ThermoFloor must be connected to a GFCI protected circuit.
  • Accessories

    Our ThermoFloor electric floor heating pad and thermostat are all that is required for an easy-to-install laminate heated floors or heated floating wood floors. Following are optional recommended accessories:

    • Extra floor sensor. Since the floor sensor is buried under the floor, it is a good idea to install a second backup sensor in the event the initial sensor is damaged by electrical strike or power surge.
    • InstAlarm® monitor. InstAlarm will let you know if a floor heating wire is accidently damaged during installation allowing the pad to be replaced before the heated floor is finished.
    • Non-heating pads. Our non-heating floor padding is the same upgraded underlayment used to make ThermoFloor and matches ThermoFloor in thickness and density to keep your floor level and compression the same.
