It’s safe to say that we all use a towel in some capacity each day. Whether it is getting out of a relaxing hot bath, bundling up our kids after a swim in the pool, or drying our hands after a load of dishes, chances are a towel has been involved. But, did you know, towels come in a variety of styles, sizes, thread counts and types? (Of course, a few manufacturers vary their exact sizes, making the following measurements approximate.)

Bath Sheet: If you love the luxury of bundling yourself up in a thick, comforting towel after a long hot bath but hate when there’s not enough cloth, a bath sheet is exactly what you’re looking for. It’s wide enough to wrap yourself up completely and absorbant enough to dry you, too. Standard measurement size for a bath sheet is 35 by 60 inches.

Bath Towel: When you think of bath linens, this is the standard-sized towel that you are most likely to envision. An essential for adults and kids alike, you can never have enough bath towels on hand. Hang them on a towel rack close to the shower for easy reach, and stack the extras in a nearby closet for visiting guests. Generally, most bath towels measure between 27 inches by 52 inches to 30 by 58 inches. It’s always a good idea to stock up on this great basic towel size.

Hand Towel: Most hand towels are used in bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas in which sinks are located. The usual measurement for a hand towel is 16 inches by 30 inches. Simple hand towels are great for everyday use. Fancier patterned hand towels are great for when guests unexpectedly drop by.

Wash Cloth: Whether you are soothing a sick child’s forehead with a cool cloth or scrubbing away the stress of the day, a good set of wash cloths is a must-have. Wash clothes generally measure 13 inches by 13 inches. It is wise to pair your wash cloths with your bath towels, as they generally are used together. Alas, they are another great item to stock up on.

Fingertip Towel: A fingertip towel is even smaller than a wash cloth, and more convenient for small messes and keeping hands clean. This type of towel usually measures 11 inches by 18 inches. Fingertip towels are perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, or even gym bags.

Tub Mat: A tub mat is usually placed on the floor to prevent you from slipping on a damp bathroom floor after a bath or shower. It also protects your bath rugs from becoming overly drenched when you first step out of the tub to dry off. Tub mats measure 22 inches by 34 inches.

While bath towels are available in sets, bath sheets usually aren’t. Purchasing bath sheets in addition to your regular towel set gives you a variety of sizes to choose from, but the bath sheets may not match the rest of your towels. Sometimes you may be able to find bath sheets in the exact same color, but not always. The solution for that is simple—choose bath sheets in a color that coordinates with the towels but doesn’t necessarily match. Properly done, the combination will look deliberate instead of haphazard.

  • Caring For Bath Towels

Your towels will look better and last longer with proper care. It is especially important with luxury towels. A few simple tips will help keep your towels looking good and working well for a long time.

New towels should be washed before they are used. Many manufacturers use a special fabric softener on new towels to make them look good on the shelf. Unfortunately that means that the towels will not be very absorbent at first. To avoid this, simply wash your towels before using them. Adding a cup of vinegar to that first wash will help set the color and prevent your towels from fading.

Wash bright and dark towels separately; the colors tend to run. If you own a set of expensive towels. stick with a laundry detergent meant for delicate washes to extend their life. Do not use fabric softener; it will coat the fibers of the towel with a silicone-like substance which will inhibit its ability to absorb water.

Drying towels in the dryer is fine, but the heat can damage most fibers. Using a lower heat setting or going back and forth between heated dry and air fluff can help keep towels looking their best longer.

How often you should wash your towels is a matter of preference and use. On average, once a week is probably fine if you remember to hang your towel up after use and allow it to dry properly.
