Hardwood Floor Refinishing Services

Why do people bother with hardwood floor refinishing . Of course cost is a factor, but the reasons for refinishing instead of replacing a whole floor go far beyond saving money.

Hardwood flooring is part of the character of a home and a reflection of the owners’ values and personality, so replacing or resurfacing hardwood floors carries deeper meaning than simply getting a new floor.

That deeper meaning is also why it’s important that you learn as much as you can before you begin any flooring project.

Do I Need Refinishing Or Installation?

  • Does Your Floor Need Refinishing?: Hardwood floors that have been resurfaced too often or need too much repair should not be refinished. Multiple finishes can weaken the hardwood and, if it needs a lot of repair, consider getting it replaced. Another option — if your floor has been fully refinished a few times, but does not need a lot of repair, consider simply recoating.
  • Refinishing Equipment. The equipment you use depends on the size of the area you are refinishing and whether you are doing a complete overhaul or just recoating.
  • Sanders — Drum, palm/orbital, floor edger
  • Buffer
  • Putty knife and scraper
  • Shop vacuum
  • Protective equipment — ear muffs, dust masks, safety goggles
  • Lambs wool or natural bristle brush, foam applicator, tack cloth
  • Repairing Hardwood Floors. Over time, hardwood floorboards may have come loose and may need to be refastened. Also, gaps and cracks form naturally in hardwood as its moisture content changes over time and the humidity in your home increases and decreases. Cracks should be filled with wood filler or putty.
  • Hardwood Floor Sanding . Using the drum sander and a course sanding paper, sand off the old finish, always sanding with the grain of the wood. Use your floor edger to get into places the drum sander can’t. Repeat the process with a medium grit sand paper and finish around the floor edges using a palm sander and fine grit paper
  • Buffing. Buff the sanded floor before staining.
  • Staining Your Hardwood Floor. You can choose oil or water-based stains in your desired colour and shade. Apply the stain according to the instructions it came with. Remove excess stain as soon as you can to avoid dark spots.
  • Hardwood Floor Finishing. Again, you can choose from oil-based or water-based urethane finishes. Use your brush or foam applicator to apply the finish. Make sure to keep each coat as even as possible. Oil-based urethane will need two to three coats, thinner water-based urethane will need three to four coats. Let each coat dry thoroughly and lightly sand and wipe clean each coat before applying the next one.
