Downtown Landrum just got a bit more delightful.

Southern Delights & More, an American bistro that serves coffee, soups, sandwiches and an array of sweet treats, opened this month in the former State Farm building at 114 E. Rutherford St.

For Linda Howard, who owns the business with her husband, Chris, its a dream come true.

Linda Howard said shes wanted such a shop since she was 9 years old. The couple bought the property in November and began a complete renovation in May. The vision started out on a napkin; from there, it grew into a detailed business plan.

This town needed something like this a place to come and talk, Linda Howard said. Thats what I want people to do come in and have a conversation with someone. When it started out on the napkin, the whole idea was discussion.

The Howards went with a vintage industrial feel, restoring the buildings original hardwood floors and ceiling, a narrow copper overhang over the food preparation area, chiseled brick visible in the back sitting area and decorated with Americana antiques.

The decorations including a coffee grinder from the 1800s, metal lunch boxes and vintage Coca-Cola signs are from Carolina Antiques & More, just a few doors down, which the family also owns.

The bistro features a back area that can be reserved. Or, just stop by and play a game of Scrabble.

Its a great feeling to see your vision come to life, Linda Howard said. Its a really nice, relaxing place to come in. and not be stressed out about the worlds problems.

Southern Delights & More buys local whenever possible, she said. Oil from Olive & Then Some, which recently opened a satellite location in Landrum, is used on some of the sandwiches. Dotties Toffee, made in Spartanburg, is on sale. Produce from nearby Dutch Country Foods and area farmers markets are used. The Howards grow their own tomatoes.

The bistro also features Blue Bell ice cream and a full truffle and chocolate line. Fifty-seven flavors of coffee shots are available. Customers can use free Wi-Fi, too.

Chris Howard, who spends much of his time restoring antiques nearby, devised the sandwich and salad combinations. And its his homemade tuna salad thats for sale. Linda Howard uses her aunts homemade egg salad recipe. Going forward, the menu may be tweaked based on customer feedback.

Thats the nice thing about having a really small business you can change things, depending on what customers want, Linda Howard said.

Landrum has given a warm welcome to the new business, the Howards said.

Its been much better than anticipated, Chris Howard said. At lunchtime and on the weekends, its just been unbelievable.

Hes currently restoring a vintage visual gas pump, some 9 feet tall, which will be used in the bistro.

Our vision was to provide an environment where the residents and tourists could take a break, Howard said. This town really is a destination town. Its a walk-around town. Its the perfect day trip.

Southern Delights & More is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call the bistro at 864-457-1181.
