Animals at the Henry County Humane Society — Geneseo shelter hope to soon move to new housing being built for them.

Area residents are invited to tour the new animal shelter from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 and attend a 2 p.m. dedication of Prairie Paws Dog Park, just north of the new shelter. The shelter is located off of Illinois Highway 82, just east of the former shelter and west of Cole Cabin.

Karen Russell, president of the Henry County Humane Society, hopes the event will encourage donations so the shelter can be finished and a moving day can be scheduled.

Geneseo teen Lauren Ludwig will take part in the dedication of the dog park. She submitted the name, Prairie Paws, in a contest to name the park. The contest was open to all area youth.

Those attending are welcome to bring their leashed pets.

Special adoption rate vouchers will be given to anyone interested in adding a furry friend to their home within 30 days of the open house.

Refreshments will be served and each dog in attendance will receive a special gift. Groomer Ashley Miller, who is with Alexis Doggie Spa in Geneseo, will be available to trim dog nails with proceeds benefiting the new shelter.

Russell said more contributions are needed before animals and volunteers can move into the new facility, which is a no-kill animal center, open from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. 365 days a year.

At present, animals are housed in a building owned by the City of Geneseo and leased to the humane society.

We are desperately in need of a new shelter primarily because we do not have adequate facilities to segregate sick and incoming animals, which is required, Russell said. We also are now only able to house four dogs and in the new shelter we will have 15 dog runs.

Phase 1 of the new facility is complete and included excavation, concrete for footings, building construction, plumbing and drain installation, radiant heat flooring installation and poured concrete floors.

Funds are needed to complete Phase 2 which includes building the interior and dog yard and installing the mechanicals, electricity, lighting and fire protection systems, as well as building the interior walls and kennels and fencing for the dog yards.

We can move in after Phase 2 is complete and that is what is important, she said.

Russell said any contributions, small or large, are appreciated. Donations for the new animal center may be mailed to Henry County Humane Society Geneseo, 14606 Roos Hill Rd, Geneseo, Illinois, 61254. Special recognition levels and room sponsorships are available. For more information, call the Humane Society at 944-4868. Donations are tax deductible.

This will give our cats and dogs a safe, caring environment until they find their forever homes, she said.

The new facility is a 4,000 square-foot steel pole building with a 1,200 square-foot attached storage garage, located on 4.6 acres of ground and includes the dog park and pavilion which will remain open to the public.

The building is designed with isolation and intake rooms for both dogs and cats, communal cat rooms with no more than the recommended 15 cats per room, a separate room for kittens, dog kennels with indoor and outdoor runs, large dog yards and a dog wash area.
