Tyroc FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a Subfloor in my basement? All concrete floors, even in new homes, conduct the cold coming from the ground underneath. To compensate for the cold, many people will cover the concrete surface with a finished floor covering. The problem with this method is that concrete is a porous substance and needs to breathe. As temperatures in the basement fluctuate, it creates the perfect environment for moisture to accumulate between the finished floor and the concrete. This is where mold or mildew begins to grow which can lead to poor indoor air quality. Installing a Tyroc subfloor directly on the concrete will create an effective moister barrier and result in a warmer, more comfortable finished floor and a healthier environment for the whole family. What is Tyroc made from?

Tyroc is an innovative subfloor product that was designed by engineers, contractors, consumers and retailers to be both a practical and environmentally responsible alternative to existing subfloor products. Tyroc’s two piece design combines a patented inorganic surface board (MgO – Magnesium Oxide) with a flexible base made of recycled materials.

The patented Tyroc surface board is composed of magnesium oxide, a natural inorganic material that is ideal for use in wet or damp areas. The surface board is impervious to fire, water, and insects and will not feed mold or mildew. The surface board is non- toxic and non-combustible.

The patented Tyroc molded base is composed of a blend of recycled rubber from used tires and recycled plastic. The groove pattern on the bottom has been designed to allow moisture to move freely to floor drains, provide a water proof barrier and permit airflow under the subfloor.

Is Tyroc an environmentally responsible subfloor product?

Yes. Our magnesium oxide, MgO, surface board is made from a naturally occurring mineral source. MgO exists in deposits as raw “rock” and is mined like other minerals. It is ground up into a powder, which is then combined with water at ambient temperature to make a cement-like (adhesive) material. MgO boards do not contain either asbestos or formaldehyde.

MgO board is a “low tech” and “energy-friendly” and recyclable product. MgO production is simple, energy efficient, and produces few “greenhouse” gases. This aspect of MgO, from the standpoint of being a ‘green’/eco-friendly product, would indicate that MgO-based products have a bright future the today’s green build environment.

MgO surface boards were used as the subfloor sheathing in the world’s tallest building. Taipei 101. Located in Taipei, Taiwan.

Our patented molded base material is made from a blend of recycled car tires and recycled plastic. 2.5 used car tires and 18.6 lbs. (8.5 kg) of plastic are used in the production of each 100 sq. ft. of Tyroc. In a typical basement 28 used car tires and 208 lbs. (95 kg.) of recycled plastic are used in Tyroc subfloor panels. The average family uses 28 car tires over the course of 20-25 years of driving.

At Tyroc we believe in using advanced research and development methods to bring new environmentally responsible products to market. We don’t believe it is necessary to cut down hundreds of thousands of trees per year or to use millions of gallons of non-renewable, and often imported, petroleum products to manufacture a subfloor product.

Why is Tyroc the best subfloor solution on the market?

Tyroc is easy to install, virtually impervious to fire, water and insects, keeps your family healthier by not feeding mildew or mold. Tyroc is only ½” high and does not require the use of an additional plywood subfloor for all but traditional hardwood flooring. Tyroc is non-toxic and can be used, without shims, over any type of concrete floor. Tyroc i s energy efficient and provides an excellent sound barrier.

Will a Tyroc subfloor help protect my finished floor covering from moisture damage?

Yes. When compared to applying finished flooring directly to concrete, a properly installed Tyroc subfloor will greatly extend the life of carpets, laminates, ceramic tiles, linoleum and other finished floor surfaces.

My basement has very low ceilings; will Tyroc be the best subfloor for my application?

Yes. Tyroc is only 1/2 inch high and has the lowest profile of any subfloor product on the market. Most OSB based and plastic waffle subfloors are almost twice as high as Tyroc.

Can I place heavy objects on my Tyroc subfloor system?

Yes. Tyroc has been engineered to handle loads in excess of 5000 lbs per square foot.

Yes. Tyroc saves money on energy and helps protect the environment – no need to run a dehumidifier before, during or after installation. No need to run a humidifier during the winter months or in areas of low relative humidity.

Tyroc acts as a highly effective barrier to moisture and cold. Tyroc will increasing your basement floor temperature by several degrees which will greatly reduce home heating costs. Tyroc will not expand or contract due to moisture, temperature or humidity. Unlike OSB subfloor products, there is no need to regulate the room temperature even when the room is not in use.

Will my Tyroc subfloor make any noise when I walk on it?

No. Tyroc’s patented molded base and flexibility provide a truly silent subfloor. Most OSB based and plastic waffle subfloor products can cause clicking and clacking and other noises after installation.

Tyroc’s engineered design has resulted in the world’s most comfortable subfloor. Unlike wood based subfloors with plastic or rigid foam under board, Tyroc has a flexible molded rubber base and a natural surface board. The result is a firm yet flexible surface called Softwalk.

Can I use radiant floor heating with Tyroc ?

Yes the Tyroc surface board is non-combustible and is ideal for use with radiant floor heating.

Why are Tyroc panels 16”x 48”?

Tyroc FAQ's - Tyroc Subflooring

At Tyroc we understand that subfloor products need to be carried into a house, usually down stairs, and always by a person. Our panels have been designed to fit comfortably under your arm so you can reduce the amount of time spent bringing materials into the home. Usually between 2 and 4 panels can be carried at a time. Panels larger than 16” tend to be bulky and it is very difficult to carry more than one panel at a time.

Yes. Your Tyroc subfloor uses a carefully engineered overlap joint for connecting the panels together. Simply lay one pane over top of another. Our simple installation process does not require any special tools. This easy installation method reduces the amount of wasted material. Tyroc is 30% 50% faster to install than OSB subfloor systems.

See the Tyroc installation manual at www.Tyrocinc.com for complete instructions.

Can I install Tyroc on uneven or pitted concrete floors?

Tyroc is a very flexible subflooring system, which means it will follow the contour of most concrete floors. If your concrete floor has extreme low points or high points (greater than1/4 inch), we recommend applying a leveling mortar prior to installing your subfloor. This is also dependent on the type of finished flooring your will be using. For example; carpet performs very well on uneven floors, whereas ceramic tile does not.

Can I use shims under my Tyroc subfloor due to extreme low points in my concrete floor?

We do not recommend using shims under Tyroc subfloors. If you have an extreme low point in your floor, greater than 1/4 inch in depth, we recommend using a leveling mortar to fill in the void.

Can I install Tyroc over cracks in my concrete floor?

Yes. Tyroc forms a great anti- fracture membrane between your concrete floor and your finished floor. We do however recommend that cracks in your concrete floor be repaired prior to installing any subfloor as excessive water may enter your basement through the cracks.

Tyroc has been engineered for use over any concrete floor or pad and over wood substrates in any environment, anywhere in the world. Tyroc can be used in basements, over cement pads, poured concrete floors in mid-high rise multi housing projects, workshops, garages, playrooms, home theatres, and exercise rooms.

Can Tyroc be used for commercial, industrial or institutional applications?

Yes. Tyroc has been engineered for use in commercial, institutional and industrial applications such as hotels, hospitals, office buildings, and condominiums. Tyroc is impervious to moisture, insects, and is resistant to mold and mildew and is ideally suited for any commercial or industrial application where moisture, mold and mildew are issues.

Does Tyroc Subflooring produce any off gases?
